Le soin de patients nouveau-nés gravement malades nécessitent une mesure régulière des niveaux d’oxygénation artériel afin d’éviter ou de limiter les risques d’hypoxie ou d’hyperoxie.

L’hypoxie peut conduire à des situations de vasoconstriction et d’hypertension pulmonaires. De plus, les dégradations résultantes du débit sanguin peuvent elles-mêmes conduire à des conséquences neurologiques ou l’altération d’autres organes.

L’hyperoxie est, elle, associée à la production de radicaux oxygène libres qui peuvent entrainer des dommages des tissues ou des cellules. En néonatologie, ce processus est communément observé par exemple chez les prématurés ayant une vascularisation immature de la rétine, pouvant entrainer des dommages parfois irréversibles de la rétine (rétinopathie de la prématurité).

La supplémentation en oxygène est critique pour la survie de nombreux enfants ayant une affliction respiratoire. En service de néonatologie, lorsque une oxygénothérapie est entreprise, isolément ou en complément d’autres thérapies (telle qu’une ventilation mécanique, surfactants, …), il existe un risque inhérent d’un changement rapide du niveau de saturation d’oxygène des patients, nécessitant alors une réponse immédiate du l’équipe soignante. Une méthode de monitoring continue du niveau d’oxygène artériel de ces patients devient alors cruciale et hautement prioritaire.
